Empyema (CT).



Clinical impression: Smoker, fever since 15 days. 

Pre and post contrast MDCT scans were obtained for the chest.



  • A loculated collection related to the posterior basal lung segment, pleurally  based, with peripheral enhancement, with air loculi seen within it, with surrounding free fluid , atelectatic bands and collapsed lung segment. There is a coiled drain seen within it.
  • Otherwise, The lungs are clear.
  • No evidence of any focal parenchymal lesion is observed.
  • No evidence of atelectasis is seen.
  • No evidence of abnormal bronchial dilatation is observed.
  • No evidence of any focal or diffuse emphysema is noted.
  • No evidence of interstitial disease is seen.
  • No evidence of any mass lesion or lymphadenopathy is observed in the mediastinum or hilar regions.
  • The mediastinal vasculature is normal.


IMPRESSION:


  • Left basal encysted pleural collection with peripheral enhancement , likely empyema, with coiled drain inside.
  • Surrounding basal lung collapse, pleural effusion and atelectatic bands.
